I WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS SOONER
I’ve spent my entire 25-year career focused exclusively on supporting independent advisors. In that career, for the past two decades, one statement I am exposed to that never changes for advisors: “I wish I would have done this sooner.” It’s true. Ask any advisor who left a captive environment to go independent, or ask any industry professional, the phrase they most often hear and most often say is, “I wish I would have done this sooner.” This must mean my past 25 years was well spent!
Independence means many things to many people. One of the strongest attributes of independence is that it is whatever you want it to be. Whatever it means to you, however, you define it, it always means more autonomy and control, which is an element every human being craves.
You are not running away from something, you are running towards something.
- True autonomy – no longer tethered to a firm’s decision-making that may not align with yours or your clients’.
- True fiduciary – free your clients from the conflict where the firm is making money in front of the client.
- Legacy creation – take a view from a generational perspective.
- Monetization or Succession – maximize the business you’ve built and attract multiple bidders, in a competitive environment to garner top offers. Bring a family member into the business you have spent your life building. Why should any firm tell you who you can or cannot bring in to run YOUR business?
I formed Fusion Financial Partners to make a difference for advisors. After a long career attracting advisors to join my predecessor firms and being at the tip-of-the-spear of the independent movement, I saw first-hand how wide – and often times ill-informed – the information gap is for advisors seeking to either launch a business or maximize enterprise value. What I discovered is, by having a true ally and trusted partner, advisors can make good decisions that are rooted in solid facts, not fiction or myths. And, now, my guidance is best when served in the purest non-biased form.
Expertise Matters. It’s the tagline we chose because it speaks volumes. I have been a senior leader on the “other side”. I have been on the “buy side” after launching an entire M&A division. We are able to diffuse the minutia and sales propaganda to avoid the confusion a due diligence process may cause by quickly eliminating options that do not make sense and representing you in front of senior executives of various service providers and custodians who are main decision makers and friends of Fusion.

And, I have finally followed the advice I have been giving to launch independence for 25 years. And, I have to say, I wish I would have done it sooner!
